Relations between Russia and Turkey have deteriorated sharply since Turkish F16s brought down a Russian fighter plane along the Syrian border. The embargo came as a response to Turkey shooting down a Russian warplane in Syria last month.

The resolution, signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, bans from January 1 imports of foodstuffs, including poultry meat, a variety of fresh, frozen and dried fruit and vegetables, as well as cloves and table salt.

The resolution cuts the number of annual licenses for 2016 granted to Turkish cargo transporters by road to 2,000 with a prospect of canceling them altogether.

Earlier this week the Russian president warned that Turkey will “regret” any diplomatic escalations against his country. “No one has a right to engage in slander against Turkey by saying that Turkey is buying oil from Daesh (IS)”, Erdogan said in comments broadcast by Turkish television on a visit to Qatar.

Turkey claims the recent Russian bombardments in Syria have not targeted the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) but the Turkmen minority in the north of the country.

Turkey on Friday deployed around 150 Turkish troops to replace forces already in the area as part of a training program for Kurdish peshmerga fighters.

“We will meet with the Turkish minister of foreign affairs, we will hear what he has to say”, Mr Lavrov said after talks with his Cypriot counterpart.

“For a Russian soldier to display a rocket launcher or something similar while passing on a Russian warship is a provocation”, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters, according to the Hurriyet news site.
