Syrian army ceasefire expires, no statement of extension

“The objective of this U.S. aggression is to bring about the failure of the truce”, said Bashar Jaafari, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations.

A truce brokered by the United States and Russian Federation has “practically failed and has ended” and there is no hope that aid will be delivered to rebel-held eastern Aleppo, a Syrian rebel official said on Monday.

Unidentified warplanes struck rebel-held areas in Syria’s divided city of Aleppo for the first time since a fragile ceasefire took effect last week, a monitoring group reported Sunday, bringing the truce brokered by the United States and Russian Federation closer to collapse.

“I am pained and disappointed that a United Nations convoy has yet to cross into Syria from Turkey, and safely reach eastern Aleppo, where up to 275,000 people remain trapped without food, water, proper shelter or medical care, O’Brien said in a statement Monday”. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 90 soldiers were killed.

The violence comes amid a bitter row between Moscow and Washington over the US-led airstrikes that killed dozens of Syrian regime troops on Saturday in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour.

Hours after the coalition strike, the Pentagon admitted US-led pilots may have hit Assad’s forces but said that they “believed they were striking a Daesh fighting position”.

The UK took part in a recent air strike in Syria that killed dozens of government troops fighting the so-called Islamic State, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

For its part, the Syrian army, which endorsed the U.S. -Russia deal, had said in a statement that the cease-fire would end at midnight Sunday.

Russia’s military said it was told by the Syrian army that at least 62 Syrian soldiers were killed in the air raid and more than 100 wounded.

On Monday, the opposition reported 254 violations by government forces and their allies since the truce started on September 12.

George Sabra, of the opposition High Negotiations Committee, told The Associated Press on Monday that the truce has been repeatedly violated and did not succeed in its main objective – opening roads for aid to enter besieged rebel-held areas.

In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a new push by Turkish forces and Syrian rebels aimed at capturing a town held by the Islamic State group.

The SOHR said it was not known who conducted the strikes, which were the first in Aleppo since the ceasefire took effect last Monday.
