Syrian state media has said the army has shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after an Israeli attack on Syrian military position in Quneitra, near the Israeli border.

“Our defense system confronted the attack, shooting down the Israeli warplane and a drone”, the army said. BBC interviewed surrendering rebels in Daraya who say they joined due to financial hardship and the revolution is a lie.

Israeli aircraft did indeed conduct an overnight mission in Syrian airspace after Syrian mortar shells once again landed on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights on Monday.

“Earlier today a projectile fired from Syria hit the northern Israeli Golan Heights”, an army statement said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman told AFP the projectile was most likely not intentional, rather spillover from ‘internal fighting in Syria’.

The incident comes hours after a Russia/US-brokered nationwide ceasefire in Syria came into effect 7pm Damascus time (16:00 GMT) on Monday. The official news agency Sana accused “armed groups” of twice violating the truce in Aleppo, saying that artillery shots were fired on neighbourhoods in the weastern part of the city. During the previous year, the Syrian army fired Russian-made SA-5 surface-to-air missile at Israeli aircraft, which failed to hit its target. The government has often referred to opposition fighters as terrorists.

The largely abandoned town lies in the disputed Golan Heights region, which has exchanged hands between Syria and Israel in a succession of wars.
