Syrian Ceasefire Talks Between US, Russia Fail Due To ‘Gaps In Trust’

Moscow and Washington may reach an agreement on resolving the Syrian crisis shortly, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, following a meeting with United States counterpart Barack Obama.

President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday failed to force a breakthrough in negotiations over a cease-fire for Syria, but agreed to keep looking for a path to provide humanitarian relief to thousands of besieged civilians in the civil war-ravaged country.

Last month, Duterte said he didn’t mind Secretary of State John Kerry but “had a feud with his gay ambassador – son of a bitch, I’m annoyed with that guy”.

“It is important for me to demonstrate that Canada cares deeply about its citizens in difficulties overseas and we need to make sure they are getting proper consular access and the kind of support through rule of law that is expected”, Trudeau said Monday. “Frankly, both offensively and defensively, we have more capacity”.

“Our collaborative effort with the United States in fighting terrorist organizations, including the ones in Syria, may be significantly improved and intensified”, Putin said, before adding he believes that Russian Federation and the U.S. could reach a deal soon.

Prime Minister Theresa May also met Putin for the first time at the weekend and said she wants “a frank and open relationship” with Russian Federation.

His words on cyber weren’t the only ones that pointed to areas of tension with the Russian leader.

After the meeting, Obama revealed the two had talked about how they could reach “a meaningful, serious, verifiable cessation of hostilities in Syria” and about Ukraine, which Russian Federation invaded in 2014.

Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies voiced opposition to protectionism and agreed to promote free trade further to accelerate global economic growth, reflecting heightening concern about sluggish trade as they concluded a two-day meeting Monday.

Obama, Xi and other leaders called during the meeting for governments to defend free trade.

Obama suggested Monday his planned meeting Duterte may not go forward.

“Undoubtedly, if we have a meeting, [drug trafficking] is something going to be brought up, and my expectation and my hope is it would be dealt with constructively”, Obama said.

President Barack Obama says there is symbolic value to his coming visit to Laos.

But Duterte did not take kindly to that notion.

“(We) will not only fend off short-term risks, but also pay attention to the medium-to-long term growth potential”. I do not have any master except the Filipino people.

“You must be respectful”, Duterte said of Obama.

It was one of Obama’s final chances to engage in face-to-face diplomacy with his counterparts before a new president is elected in November. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who supports protectionist trade policies, has pulled into an effective tie with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, erasing a substantial deficit.

Obama stressed that theme at a separate news conference with May.

“Back home we’ll have to cut through the noise once election season is over”.

The ruling against Apple has pushed the issue into the limelight and raised the risk of significant push-back from the United States, where some lawmakers are saying it represents a European encroachment on the US potential tax base.

“He’s exercising his constitutional right to make a statement”, Obama said.
