Syrian forces, Kurds push Islamic State out of Hasaka city – monitor

Despite their complaints about outmatched equipment, the Kurdish militias have seen unparalleled success in pushing ISIS back from territory seized in northern Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said clashes were continuing in the city’s southern outskirts but that Hasaka itself was now free from Islamic State fighters.

The group also said the death toll included at least 26 IS child soldiers. He didn’t really explain what diplomacy he has in mind, or how it might work, but I would suggest that supporting the US-Turkish safe zone initiative, which will require understanding and addressing the fears and suspicions of the Kurds of Turkey, Syria and Iraq, would be a good place to start.

At least ten Kurdish fighters were killed in the explosion and subsequent gun battle.

State news agency SANA said Syria’s armed forces “dealt great blows to the Daesh (IS) terrorists…in a special operation against the terrorist hotbeds” in Zuhur on Tuesday.

IS had attacked regime-controlled neighbourhoods in the city’s south, but the YPG helped eject IS from several of these areas.

Rose said his unit has experienced more fighting and bloodshed than he can fathom since he left for Syria in the beginning of March, and he described sleepless nights and days.

He called the group’s month-long assault on Hasakeh a “major loss”, as IS lost many military commanders in the fight, including its provincial “wali” or governor.

The capture of the town, which lies on the east bank of the Euphrates river, is the latest victory for Kurdish forces in Syria against IS.
