The Observatory said at least one vehicle had been targeted on the Castello Road early on Sunday morning, adding it was unclear if it was carrying civilians or fighters.

The Syrian army said Wednesday it was observing a 72-hour ceasefire across the country, coinciding with the festival marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

On Thursday, the State Department said it was deeply disturbing that Syrian forces were continuing attacks in areas such as Aleppo and the Damascus suburbs and urged Russian Federation to exert pressure on the Syrian government to halt such attacks.

He said government forces were being aided by Iranian fighters and that reinforcements on the government side had arrived from further south. Then by Saturday, the Syrian regime forces imposed full control over the Castello Road, putting rebels under heavy siege.

Islam Alloush, a spokesman for the Jaish al-Islam fighting group, said government forces moved in on the suburb of Mayda, seeking to block a rebel supply line, while the opposition fought back to regain a number of areas previously captured.

The attack was accompanied by a barrage of rocket fire into the regime-held west of the city, which killed at least eight people, said state media.

“On the first day of Eid, my family and I drove into Aleppo to see our relatives”.

“(The road) was not risk-free, but now there is not a matter of danger, now the road is cut”, Mr Malahifji said.

“The shells have rained down on the western neighborhoods since 4:30 am”, he told Agence France-Presse.

It had calmed by the afternoon, but few residents were venturing out.

For more than five years, Assad has been fighting a civil war in Syria, which has broken the country up and had a disastrous effect on the economy. Al-Qaeda and the Syrian military have repeatedly exchanged fire over parts of the city.

“There is a need to adopt a new strategy to push the peace process by adopting a tougher policy against the regime’s violations against the Syrian people… before calling for a new round of negotiations”, the HNC statement said.

The Syrian military said it would extend a nationwide ceasefire for another 72 hours from Tuesday, state media reported on Monday.
