The Islamic State group claimed its fighters shot down a Syrian regime warplane near the eastern city of Deir Ezzor and killed its pilot, in statements on jihadi websites.

IS has been trying to take the entire province, where part of the capital and the military airport are still under the control of government forces.

The footage shows the burning rubble of the plane with the video released by the Amaq agency, which is aligned with ISIS.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based organization which monitors Syria’s war through a network of sources inside the country, said Islamic State had targeted and brought down the plane in the Thardah hills, about 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Deir al-Zor military airport.

Thousands of fighters will spread worldwide “and our job is to spot them and stop them before they come to the United States to harm innocent people”, he added.

It is unknown how ISIS shot down the Syrian plane.

There is no clarification as to whether the jet was brought down by a missile or gun fire, however, it is for the third time wherein ISIS has attacked fighter jets since the month of April.

Former reports from the region have included a Russian helicopter being shot down in Palmyra, in central Syria.

Elsewhere on Friday, air raids in the northwestern province of Idlib killed another six civilians including two children, the Observatory said.

Nine people were killed in the Tariq al-Bab district and three died in Salhin, both in eastern Aleppo. I was praying at the mosque when the strike happened.
