Syrian rebels pull back further as military gains in Aleppo

The Observatory reported heavy clashes in Aleppo’s southern neighborhoods, but rebels appeared to have held their ground Saturday after two weeks of advances by government forces and allied militias almost erased them from the city.

Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have now entered the Shaar neighborhood, after regaining control of almost two-thirds of eastern Aleppo in their most recent offensive.

A Syrian war monitoring group says government forces have captured large parts of Aleppo’s central-eastern al-Shaar neighborhood from rebels.

The proposal also calls for negotiations over the future of the city of Aleppo, once the humanitarian crisis eases.

In an interview with Syrian daily Al-Watan to be published on Thursday (8 December), Assad cautioned that a victory in the second-largest Syrian city would not mean a complete end to the ongoing war against rebel factions that want him removed from power.

Russian Federation said the Syrian army was suspending combat operations in Aleppo late Thursday to allow for the evacuation of civilians from besieged rebel-held neighborhoods, but residents and fighters reported no let-up in the bombing and shelling campaign on the opposition’s ever-shrinking enclave.

The agency quoting an unnamed police official says 64 were also injured Wednesday, including some in critical condition, after rockets fell on at least four different neighborhoods in government-held Aleppo. He says “the events taking place in Aleppo are of serious concern to all of us”.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday it carried out an operation overnight with Syria’s Red Crescent to evacuate 150 civilians, many disabled or sick, from a health facility in the Old City.

Fighting is still continuing in Aleppo and the government has made significant gains since the beginning of the month with the support of Russian warplanes.

“Morale has hit rock bottom”, he said from inside the city’s remaining rebel-held enclave.

Washington- The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. have declared readiness to consider additional restrictive measures against supporters of Head of Syrian Regime Bashar al-Assad regarding the situation in Aleppo.

Russian Federation has been pressing for rebels and their families to be evacuated to the rebel-held town of Idlib, but the rebels have said evacuees should go to northern Aleppo province.

The Syrian civil war seems to take a surprisingly unexpected turn as the rebel leadership is calling for a five-day truce and keep both fighting forces at bay to allow civilians to evacuate to safer sanctuary.

Meanwhile on Friday, the 193-member U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate end to attacks on civilians and all besieged areas in war-torn Syria including Aleppo.
