Syrian refugees and terrorists are not the same

This grandstanding over refugees represents a gross deviation from American ideals.

This local news report from Charlotte, North Carolina outlines the debate in that state between the governor and refugee advocate groups over the vetting process for Syrian refugees. But it’s the right thing to do.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, explained the rationale behind the House bill: “The country is uneasy and unsettled”. According to immigration expert Jessica Vaughan, since 2009 we have accepted 70 percent of all resettled United Nations-designated refugees worldwide.

Albright did not compare her family’s situation with that of Syrian refugees. There are roughly 10 million Syrians who are refugees (4.2 million) or internally displaced (6.5 million).

“Who better to run Syria than the good people of Syria?” he asked.

Americans know that at least one of the those terrorists apparently arrived in France as a Syrian refugee. They undergo multiple interviews and biometric screenings. “The Department of Homeland Security … the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Counterterrorism Center, the Department of Defense, and the Department of State, they all have to sign off”. On Thursday, the Republican-controlled House passed legislation that would bring the refugee program to a halt, but President Obama has vowed to veto the bill. This would involve a tremendous waste of time and resources and likely create a bureaucratic backlog.

“Gov. Baker believes that MA has a role in welcoming refugees into the Commonwealth and in the wake of recent, awful tragedies overseas is working to ensure the public’s safety and security despite the limited role state governments play in the process”. However, Abbott and his fellow governors are misguided.

“There was a Supreme Court case about whether states have the authority to restrict who can move in and out of their states”. There is also statutory law that allows the President to decide whether an “emergency refugee situation” exists and to admit refugees as he sees fit. He is calling on President Obama to impose a moratorium on accepting more Syrian refugees until proper vetting is assured. People whose ancestors have lived in this region for millennia are being chased from their traditional homes and left to the mercy of an global community less and less able to meet their needs or even defend their lives in too many instances.

Among the Democrats who backed the bill was Sen.

But Syrian refugees are not the problem. The heinous terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut, in Iraq and Nigeria. Retired Gen. Jack Keane, a harsh critic of the Obama administration’s Middle East policy, implored Republicans to resist the rhetoric against Muslims and refugees.

Speaking about Syrian refugees, Obama said that “slamming the door in their faces would be a betrayal of our values”.

And all of the Republican-led outrage over keeping us “safe” can be put into perspective when we recall that, after 20 schoolchildren were gunned down in Newtown, Connecticut, Republican lawmakers refused to take action on gun control or mental health legislation.

This remark comes after the terrorist attack last Friday in Paris. This is as inhumane as it is un-American. Deal called on the Obama administration to work with GEMA to check the backgrounds of the Syrian refugees living in Georgia. Under the program, foreigners from 38 countries can enter the USA without visas for short stays.
