Tackling the gender pay gap reduces other kinds of inequality too
And that means #EqualPayDay matters to you, even if you’re totally loaded, and have replaced your bedframe in favour of ‘Equal Pay Day on 9th November is an opportunity to highlight that we still have a long way to go in closing the gender pay gap, ‘ Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society tells marie claire.

Women working full-time take home about 5,000 GBP ($7,500) less a year than men, according to a report by the Fawcett Society, a campaign group promoting women’s rights in the labour market.
“The message to women and men at work is – it’s OK to talk about pay”.
The date has arrived five days later this year than 2014, indicating that the pay gap has narrowed – although last year it was actually three days earlier than in 2013.
“We need pay transparency, equal pay audits and a requirement on companies to tackle gender inequality – or face fines”.
Prime Minister David Cameron had called the gap “a scandal”, pledging to force large companies to publish the average pay of male and female employees.
Fathers earned the highest overall median salaries at about $67,900, compared to $46,800 for married mothers, and single women with children had the lowest median salary at $38,200. The fact that women are paid less and promoted less from this point onwards is a direct result of their decision to start a family, so the blame is effectively entirely theirs.
Why Are Women Still Paid Less Than Men? .
The United Kingdom has the fourth most unequal incomes of 30 developed countries, and our poor record has been noted by economic heavyweights who have joined up the problems of gender inequality and how economically divided a country is.
“Equal pay is not yet equal”.
But there’s another positive effect of tackling the pay gap.
“We know that young women also experience difficulty trying to get into careers that they might otherwise choose”.
The organisation showed women working full-time effectively stopped earning as they earn 14.2% less an hour than men working full-time.
This absurd unfairness needs to be addressed urgently so that women are justly rewarded for the work they do.
Maria Miller, chair of The Women and Equalities Committee, said: “The gender pay gap is mainly a problem for women over 40, and now hits women in their 50s even harder”.
“Māori and Pasifika women have already begun working for free this year, and it is not okay for this pay inequality to continue”.
“We should be proud but this is no time to pat each other on the back and say job well done”, Morgan wrote.
