The X Power is just the first US CDMA phone with a MediaTek chip in it, but the company says it will have completed modem certification for the P10 on all four major carriers by the end of October.

Sprint is today announcing the LG X Power, a mid-range Android smartphone that isn’t particularly remarkable save for one thing, the processor inside of it.

This version of the X power also comes with a different chipset compared to the global model. It’s the first time that MediaTek’s chips have been used in a device on a major USA carrier network.

“Collaborating with Sprint to enable a WorldMode smartphone based on our MediaTek Helio series chipset is an important milestone for MediaTek”, said Mohit Bhushan, a MediaTek vice president, in a statement. The phone supports the carrier’s LTE+ network, as well as 3G and 4G LTE, GSM, UMTS. Competition in the smartphone market and the array of consumer choices drives demand for super-mid market devices with advanced technologies like the LG X power.

The MediaTek helio P10 series integrates a suite of multimedia features, including gaming-quality graphics and HD screen support for the LG X power’s 5.3-inch HD touchscreen display. There’s an 8-megapixel camera on the X power’s backside and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for your selfie needs.

MediaTek was founded in 1997.

The first MediaTek-enabled smartphone for Sprint launched today, breaking new ground for MediaTek in the USA market. T-Mobile already sells some MediaTek-equipped devices. MediaTek has other, more powerful processors in its lineup, as well, but it’s not clear if or when they will come to the US.

Following its launch at Cricket Wireless, LG’s new budget-friendly LG X power smartphone will soon arrive at Boost Mobile, another prepaid mobile carrier. Overall, MediaTek employs more than 15,000 people, and its revenues in 2015 were $6.7 billion.
