Takata to recall 35 million more air bag inflators
In total, there are about 85 million Takata inflators installed in trucks and automobiles in the US. The auto parts supplier will book a combined 20.1 billion yen ($188 million) in charges, 16.6 billion of which was decided after reviewing air-bag recall costs, according to a statement on Monday.

The additional order comes on top of 28.8 million inflators already recalled in the country, making the Takata inflator recall the largest product safety recall in the US auto industry, it said. At least 11 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide have been blamed on the Takata parts.
The problem has been linked to older cars with long-term exposure to high humidity.
At issue are faulty inflators that can explosively rupture upon deployment, propelling shrapnel from the airbag it inflates into vehicle occupants.
One of the biggest challenges in recalling the Takata airbag inflators is to find and persuade owners to get their cars repaired and their air bags replaced.
“Honda Malaysia is working with the local authorities to get the database of current owners of these cars and communicate with them on the recall”, Jordhatt Johan, a spokesman for Honda Malaysia, said by phone today. However, this safety crisis is going to be further expanded, as the USA regulators said this week that, following the agency’s confirmation of the root cause behind the inflators’ propensity to rupture, the carmakers would have to recall another 35 million to 40 million inflators.
“The largest auto recall in our nation’s history just doubled but, unfortunately, the pace at which Takata and the automakers are replacing these faulty airbags has not”, said U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in a statement Wednesday.
Neither the government nor Takata would say if more recalls are coming, but under an agreement reached with the company previous year, it must prove that the inflators are safe or begin recalling them in 2018.
“I fully understand the frustration”, he said.
The new recall affects vehicles manufactured by Jaguar-Land Rover, Fisker, and Tesla Motors for the first time. “We can’t lose sight of that”, he said.
More than 8 million airbags have been replaced with the existing recalls.
“This issue is urgent”, Rosekind said. They have yet to definitively link the deaths to the airbags.
“Americans deserve to have confidence that this vital safety device will protect them and their loved ones in the event of a crash”, he said. With the prior recalls, the move means a substantial number of cars on the road are in need of having their air bags repaired. Carfax, which sells vehicle history reports, also lets people check open recalls for free.

NHTSA administrator Dr. Mark Rosekind recommends that anyone who’s received notice that their airbag could be defective should get it replaced immediately.
