Take a ride to Mexico with UberPASSPORT

The San Diego to Tijuana exchange is the first time that Uber will allow its drivers to cross country borders, as the company normally requires drivers to drop passengers off at border lines and ask the passengers to walk across to the other country.

An UberPASSPORT ride from downtown San Diego to the Tijuana Airport will cost about $100.

“While there are many places we could have launched this product, we recognize the importance of the largest border crossing in the world and the unique relationship between San Diego and Tijuana”, Uber said in a blog post announcing the service.

Before, ride-sharing passengers would have to take a vehicle to the border, get out, cross into Mexico, and then call another auto to take them into Tijuana or somewhere on the Baja peninsula. “And I think the launch of this new potion is gonna pay tremendous dividends to San Diegans and our families and for our economy”, said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

And the app fits well in San Diego’s focus on technology.

“UberPassport is a new way to facilitate cross-border opportunities by providing reliable and accessible transportation from San Diego to Tijuana”, Ballard said. “Today we’re trying to bring these cities closer together”.

Riders must have all required documentation to cross back into the U.S.

From North Park to Zona Centro in Tijuana, the fare is $90. A ride from Pacific Beach to Rosarito will cost about $160.

Instead, to return to the USA, riders can request an Uber to the global border via the company’s local service in Tijuana.

Uber has a new option for all the young Americans planning to spend spring break in Mexico in the near future.
