Plex DVR adds two new sections to the traditional Plex interface: Recording Schedule, and Program Guide, with the latter even recommending upcoming broadcasts based upon your viewing habits and content now in your video library. Now you can view TV in a living room or on your phone, using a streaming stick in a hotel, or even on a plane when you’re offline. “No other solution comes close”. If you only use your Plex server as a DVR, this won’t seem like much of a difference from a standard DVR, but if you’ve also got a large library of other content stored, having everything available in one place is a plus, and being able to watch that content anywhere you want is a major plus. The Plex DVR is not going to be an additional add-on service, but is rather being bundled into Plex’s subscription product, Plex Pass, which is now $4.99 per month. In addition to “On Right Now”, “Starting Soon” and “Premieres Tonight”, which are exactly what they sound like, Plex also users your existing library to suggest “Upcoming Favorites”.
Unlike the typically complex and fragmented software that cord cutters need today, Plex replaces the bland electronic program guide, and eliminates the need for DVR recording software, automatically identifying and integrating with tuners and antennas.
Plex DVR recording is finally here thanks to a new partnership with the SiliconDust, the makers of the HDHomeRun digital tuner. Plex Pass subscription – the company explained that the data to populate the Plex DVRs program guide is provided by Gracenote and it isn’t free.

With the new DVR feature, which will be an exclusive to Plex Pass subscribers, it’s clearer what Plex is asking consumers to pay for – especially when one considers that competitors like TiVo charge up to $15 per month for DVR service.
