Taliban forces take control of Sangin in Afghanistan’s Helmand province
“The United States condemns this cowardly attack on members of the USA and Afghan forces, and we remain committed to supporting the Afghan people and their government”, the White House’s statement said.

“Detective Joseph Lemm epitomized the selflessness we can only strive for: putting his country and city first”, Bratton said in a statement.
Abdul Shakor Qudosi, the district governor of Bagram, which is north of Kabul, said three Afghan police officers were wounded in the attack, but it was not clear whether that was in addition to the wounded mentioned by American officials, or whether he had different information.
“We are still learning all of the details, but two other service members and a USA contractor were also injured”, Carter said in a statement released yesterday by the Defense Department.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Monday suicide attack on US troops that killed six near Bagram Air Field.
The NATO-led coalition would not confirm the identities of those killed, but Abdul Shukor Qudoosi, governor of the district where the base is located, said all six were American.
Rasoolyar’s comments come a day after he posted a desperate plea on Facebook to President Ashraf Ghani, warning the entire province was at risk of falling to the Taliban. Felbab-Brown said. “All of these are patches, holding until the Afghan forces are more capacious”. Afghan security forces moved to Helmand province in an effort to defeat the terrorists and during the weekend, at least 90 Afghan security personnel were killed during heavy fighting against the militants.
Reports of mass desertions, poorly performing and badly supplied army units and weak leadership have underlined the problems facing government forces fighting alone since the withdrawal of global troops from combat past year.
Sangin was once the centre of operations for global forces in Afghanistan.
Helmand is a strategic province, as it produces the majority of the world’s opium – used the help fund the insurgency.
The Taliban attack in Afghanistan that left six American troops dead – including a NY police detective – highlights the challenge US and allied forces face in the region where experts say it’s far too unsafe to pull forces out any time soon. With NATO contributions, there are about 13,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan.
The aim is to end more than 14 years of war with the Taliban, who held power in Afghanistan until 2001 but were overthrown in a US-backed campaign for harbouring the Al Qaeda leaders behind the September 11 attacks. His deputy, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, succeeded him, causing internal ructions and delaying the likelihood that a peace dialogue with the Afghan government, halted after the announcement of Mullah Omar’s death, will restart in the foreseeable future.

Last week, the Pentagon warned of deteriorating security in Afghanistan and assessed the performance of Afghan security forces as “uneven and mixed”. “Ninety men have been killed in Gereshk and Sangin districts in the last two days”.
