Taliban Insurgents Targeted By US Airstrikes
Besieged Afghan forces were struggling to head off a complete Taliban takeover of the critical southern district of Sangin on Tuesday, and a new deployment of British troops was rushed in to help direct an increasingly pressed battle across the surrounding province of Helmand.

Combined with the USA airstrikes and the presence of US special forces soldiers, who have been on the ground in Helmand for at least a week, Afghan officials were confident that the army would be able to win back ground in Sangin and other Helmand districts that the insurgents have seized in recent months.
The U.S. military launched airstrikes in the Sangin district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province, which has been under Taliban siege, the Agence France-Presse reported Thursday.
Britain on Tuesday said a small contingent of its troops had arrived in Camp Shorabak, the largest British base in Afghanistan before it was handed over to Afghan forces a year ago.
Gaining control of the town is important to the Taliban as it sits on crucial smuggling routes for drugs and arms which helps fund it.
“Clearance operations are under way and the foothold of the security forces has been expanding each day over the last three days”, Faisal said.
Instead, British troops, which are part of the UKs delegation to the United Nations Resolute Support Mission, were sent to the district of Sangin to help the Afghan forces.
“US forces conducted two strikes in Sangin district, Helmand Province, December 23, against threats to the force”, US Army Colonel Michael Lawhorn said.
Sangin is an area, which used to be a British battleground that witnessed the killing of more than 100 British soldiers. The U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have around 13,000 troops in the country, majority operating under the training mandate.
Political analyst Waheed Muzhda, formerly an official in the Taliban’s 1996-2001 administration, said the Taliban needed to sort out its leadership problems before it started talking about the peace process.
The fierce fighting in Helmand, a traditional Taliban stronghold and one of the world’s main centers of opium production, has piled pressure on President Ashraf Ghani, already on the defensive as security worsens across the country.
“The Taliban have made big advances in Helmand province in summer and into the winter and the offensive is increasing”, he said.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf said the siege continued “and the government will soon announce their defeat”.
Eyewitnesses say some government forces are still fighting in the district centre but are cut off.
