Taliban resurgence: British troops re-deployed to Helmand, Afghanistan
Fierce battles were underway Tuesday between Afghan forces and the Taliban in southern Helmand province where the insurgents have nearly completely captured a strategic district as Britain deployed military advisers to the restive area.

A spokesperson for the MoD said: “As part of the UK’s ongoing contribution to Nato’s Resolute Support Mission, a small number of United Kingdom personnel have deployed to Camp Shorabak in Helmand province in an advisory role”.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed troops had been deployed, but insisted they would not take on a combat role and were in the country to provide support and advice to the Afghan National Army (ANA).
Since British combat troops pulled out of Afghanistan in October past year, the Afghan Security Forces have struggled to halt Taliban advances.
Sangin district has bounced in and out of Taliban control for some years, and fighting there has produced some of the highest casualty counts among Afghan and worldwide forces in 14 years of war.
British and American forces struggled for years to control the volatile province, and numerous more than 450 British servicemen and women killed in Afghanistan lost their lives fighting there.
Following the invasion, the US-led coalition forces formed the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), created to hit back against the Taliban and al-Qaeda insurgents, who proved extremely strong opposition, with unique knowledge of the landscape – both socially and geographically.
Foreign affairs editor Sam Kiley says there is also a great deal of concern that if the Taliban switches allegiance to Islamic State, which is making inroads in Afghanistan, the multi-billion pound trade will fall into IS’ hands. “We express our deepest condolences to the families of the six USA service members killed and to all of those injured in today’s Taliban attack near Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan”.
His claim was supported by police in Helmand who said that some security personnel had been rescued from the Taliban siege and security measures had been expanded in the area.
The Afghan officials were expecting to sit-in for the second round of peace talks with the Taliban group representatives in Pakistan late in the month of July.
The strategic importance of Sangin is its position between Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, to the province’s northern districts. This week, Sangin, in the Helmand province, has reportedly been overrun by Taliban militants. It was the most deadly attack on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops since August. One of the attacks, on a USA special operations forces base outside Kabul, killed one U.S soldier and eight Afghan civilian contractors.

He said Taliban fighters were outside the compound walls and the situation risked slipping entirely out of control. Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah called the Helmand situation a “top priority” and commandoes and special forces were sent to save Sangin from an insurgent takeover.
