Talks between European Union, United States have failed, official says

Merkel did not comment on the matter at the time, although a spokesperson for the chancellor said the remarks were “vile” and “sad”, but she told Boateng’s parents on Sunday: “You have a great son”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks during an interview by ARD TV presenters Tina Hassel and Thomas Baumann, in Berlin, Germany, Sunday Aug. 28, 2016.

She said: “That’s not right at all that some countries say: ‘generally speaking, we don’t want to have Muslims in our countries'”.

Germany expects up to 300,000 asylum seekers to arrive in 2016, less than one-third of the total during 2015’s record influx, the Federal Office for Migrants and Refugees (BAMF) said on Sunday.

“A lot of what was going badly in the beginning we’ve eventually managed to do pretty well”. Many violent attacks on civilians in July, two of which were claimed by Islamic State, have focused attention on Merkel’s open-door migrant policy.

Merkel´s decision last September to open the doors to asylum seekers was seen in many European nations, notably those in the east, as an invitation for further mass migration.

Officials have spoken of more than a million arrivals in 2015, but Mr Weise said the actual figure was likely lower once duplicate registrations and people who travelled on to other countries are excluded.

“With the state we’re in, we’re not even in a position to take in a city state”, said Gabriel, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) – the junior coalition partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government.

The poll, in Bild am Sonntag newspaper, suggested 50 percent opposed her running for another term and 42 percent supported her, which represents a drop in her support since past year. According to the Emnid poll conducted on 25 August, 42% are in favour.

Merkel may end up delaying an announcement of whether she’ll run again until early 2017, Der Spiegel reported on Saturday, citing CDU sources. Opponents also say the deal could lead to more privatization of public services, including education and health care.
