She said she remains unsure exactly how many customers had been affected and warned any United Kingdom could face the same threat.

KitGuru Says: Do you think Talk Talk should be fined for allowing its customer data to be copied away without much encryption protection?

Police are investigating Wednesday’s attack, which TalkTalk said had affected its website rather than its “core systems”.

She added that TalkTalk was working “tirelessly” to give its customers the “clarity they absolutely deserve”, despite claims that TalkTalk has not done enough to keep its customers informed.

“Sky’s technology correspondent Tom Cheshire said a Distributed Denial of Service attack was probably part of the hack: “(It’s) when a network is flooded with requests which it can’t respond to in time, so it shuts down.

TalkTalk has temporarily halted its “Bopheads” sponsorship campaign on The X Factor 2015 after hackers stole the personal details of up to four million of its customers.

“We can confirm that we do not store complete credit card details on the website; any credit card details that may have been accessed had a series of numbers hidden and therefore are not usable for financial transactions”, Talk Talk said. The London police cybercrime unit has just started investigating the alleged theft of the data, not all of which was encrypted.

No arrests have been made.

TalkTalk also contacted major banks in its service area, which are monitoring the accounts of the company’s customers for suspicious activity.

The amount of information that may have been stolen – including bank account numbers and sort codes – is also significantly lower than initially thought, she revealed, adding that this is “extremely good news” for TalkTalk customers. TalkTalk is offering a year’s free credit monitoring for all its customers and will be contacting customers with the details. It also suggested that all customers change their passwords to the company’s Web site once it’s back online.

Beleaguered ISP TalkTalk has sought to calm customers following a devastating cyber attack on its systems, stating that hack “was not as bad as first thought”.

And in February, TalkTalk customers were warned about scammers who had managed to steal thousands of account numbers and names.
