Fondly called “Captain” , Vijayakanth had earlier this month declared at his party’s women’s wing conference that his party will go alone in the upcoming elections.

The new alliance said Vijaykant, popularly known as “Captain” and who even the BJP was wooing, would be the chief ministerial candidate of the People’s Welfare Front (PWF).
After the meeting this morning, Vaiko and Vijaykanth said the DMDK will contest the most seats – 124 of Tamil Nadu’s 234 – while the other 110 will be shared between the constituents of the PWF. He doesn’t know what is going on in Tamil Nadu and the problems faced by people.
PWF-a front floated by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Vaiko-led Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and T. Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi-was launched in July past year as an alternative to the Dravidian parties.
The DMDK contested the 2006 assembly election across 232 constituencies without any alliance partner and got around 10 percent of vote-share. Eight DMDK legislators turned rebels and supported the ruling AIADMK.
The BJP is expected to tie up with PMK, whose leader Anbumani Ramadoss is already projecting himself as the chief ministerial candidate.
CPI-M leader G. Ramakrishnan and CPI leader R. Mutharasan said March 23 would be a golden day in the state’s politics.
The saffron party criticised the development, with senior party leader and Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan saying “it is an anti-people alliance and one that will be of no effect in the polls”. He further said the party would commence its election campaign in another ten days. Its leader M. Karunanidhi had publicly expressed the hope that the DMDK would join the DMK-led alliance.

“BJP will face the polls with enhanced strength and we will accept anyone coming to our(headed) alliance”, he said adding the front will be instrumental in forming of the next government.
