After England elected to field first, early swing from Chris Woakes and good pace from Mark Wood made sure Bangladesh openers were off to a sedate start.

Tamim received excellent support from Mushfiqur Rahim (79) in a third-wicket partnership of 166. Humbled by New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Australia and finally Bangladesh the English crashed out of the tournament at the group stages.

Both teams feature several survivors from Bangladesh´s 15-run shock win at Adelaide which condemned England to a woeful first-round exit from the last World Cup.

However, what Bangladesh showed with this batting innings is that they aren’t in this Champions Trophy just to make up the numbers.

Hales wicket would be the last of the day as Root (133*) and skipper Eoin Morgan put on a masterclass in clinical run chases to romp home with sixteen balls to spare.

Opener Tamim Iqbal’s aesthetic knock guided his team to a total of 305/6 in 50 overs where the left-hander went on to score 128 runs.

Root also suffered an injury scare when he damaged his calf early in his innings but he made light of the problem to post his highest one-day global score.

Tamim started on a cautious note getting his first boundary off 21st ball that he faced.

Joe Root shook off an ankle injury to lead England to victory in the opening match of the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh.

Immediately after the fortieth over, Ali came into ball as Tamim hammered him on the first ball of the over for a huge six over long-on.

Roy, so unequivocally backed by Morgan to open for the entire tournament despite his lack of runs, had to reflect on his fifth single-figure score in his last six ODI innings after paddling an attempted ramp-sweep just within the clutches of short fine-leg – where Mustafizur Rahman held a memorable leaping catch above his head.

“I was pretty happy with our preparations for the Champions Trophy, although obviously you don’t want to lose a series that you play in. The main bowlers must bowl better”, said Mortaza.

“We couldn’t take wickets in the middle of the innings, that is the key point”.

Stokes bowled on the outfield during England’s training session at The Oval on Wednesday and Morgan said: “We will see how he pulls up tomorrow (Thursday) to see how much he will bowl”.

The Indian team has not displayed any signs of stress during their two warm-up matches which they won without breaking any sweat.

With the batsmen milking the runs on either side of the wicket, Stokes engaged in an exchange with Tamim after being hit for a boundary in the 32nd over, but the umpire intervened.

It took the part-time leg-spin of Sabbir Rahman (13) to eventually break the 159-run stand, Hales caught in the deep as he looked to bring up his hundred with a six, having taken 10 from the two previous deliveries.

Morgan, however, said Roy will keep his place in the team for England’s next match against New Zealand in Cardiff on Tuesday.
