The explosion occurred at around 1:20 p.m.in the 2200 block of Alameda Street, an LACFD spokesman said.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast at the Tesoro refinery in Wilmington near Long Beach.
KNX says the top of the tank is damaged.
Evacuations were in place for the area a half-mile around, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ramos with the Carson Station.
The newspaper added that no injuries were reported during the accident, and the authorities continued to investigate the cause of fire.
The tank rupture didn’t immediately affect other refinery operations.
Streets near the Tesoro Corp. refinery in Carson were closed Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, due to a sulfur-tank explosion at the site.
Authorities are advising residents who live within a quarter-mile radius of the refinery to stay inside until further notice. The public were advised to avoid the area.
The facility’s own fire department is the primary responding agency, county fire Inspector Richard Licon said.
The cause of the incident was under investigation, Tesoro said.
