Tanzania quake kills 13, hundreds injured

At least 11 people have been killed and more than a hundred injured after a magnitude 5.7 quake hit northern Tanzania.

Aftershocks of the magnitude 5.7 quake were also felt in parts of Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. “We don’t expect many more injuries”.

He said most of the casualties and damage occurred in Bukoba district itself.

One of the victims in Bukoba Municipality, Lilian Lugakingira, said her house was affected by the quake.

DISASTER relief agencies are working round the clock to cushion citizens in Bukoba, the Tanzanian town worst-hit by a devastating weekend quake that has left over 15 people dead.

Emelensiana Benjamin, a resident of Bukoba, said houses there were so badly cracked that residents were afraid to enter them. “We’ll see tomorrow”, Deodatus Kinawilo said.

Kagera regional police commander Augustino Olomi said at least 11 people have been killed in the natural disaster and over 200 others injured.

No damage was reported in the economic capital, Dar es Salaam, which is located some 1,400 kilometres southeast of Bukoba.

According to a report by The Guardian, low intensity seismic activity is quite a common occurrence in the Great Lakes region.
