The services – popular in much of the world and already a happy reality in a few US cities – still account for less than 2% of grocery sales, according to the latest estimates from Willard Bishop, a retail consulting company based in Barrington, Ill.
Drugstore retailer Walgreens is expanding its partnership with delivery startup Postmates, which operates in 30 cities, expanding the number of items that customers can order for same-day delivery.
Instacart’s delivery area now includes downtown Minneapolis, Uptown, Dinkytown, the University of Minnesota campus, Edina, St. Louis Park, Richfield and Hopkins, Morning Star notes.
The first delivery is free, after which it will be $4 for a two-hour delivery or $6 for a one-hour delivery.
No Costco membership is required.
In a statement issued today (15 September), Target said: “Minneapolis-area residents can now buy groceries online from Target – and receive their orders at home in as little as an hour”. “Those factors lead to an ideal market for Instacart delivery, and we look forward to servicing Minneapolis with the great mix of stores we have signed on as retail partners”.
The deal with Instacart adds perishable items like eggs and milk its options for ordering online as well as faster delivery times, rounding out the offerings of the company for its online shoppers.
Target shoppers simply go to Instacart’s website or download a mobile app in order to shop.
The grocery delivery fees will start through Instacart at $3.99. The cost is just $99 per year.

Target added: “In addition to groceries, the collaboration will allow guests to purchase select Target household, health and beauty, pet and baby products such as diapers and formula”. And last week, Google Inc, (GOOGL – Analyst Report) entered the race with a grocery delivery service dubbed Google Express, which the company is testing in San Francisco.
