Everyone has been watching out for American Music Awards every year as entertainment’s hottest artists gather for this memorable awards night.
It’s unclear how much of a Grammys prognosticator the AMAs will be this year, but regardless, it doesn’t look good for the likes of D’angelo, while we can’t see Taylor Swift losing to Ariana Grande for a major award again.
Bryan beat out Jason Aldean and Sam Hunt, who won new artist of the year.
They may have been singing Marvin Gaye but nobody expected Puth and Trainor to take the legendary singer’s line “let’s get it on”, literally.
The mum-of-two, 46, opened the show with a fierce dance routine to a medley of covers before working her way through a number of eye-catching creations.
She won Song of the Year for Blank Space, Favourite Pop/Rock Album for 1989 and was named Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist. As tribute to the Paris shooting victims, Celine Dion sang Hymne a L’amour. In Grammys, awarded on the basis of votes by members of the Recording Academy, but in American Music Awards are determined by a poll of the public and fans.
The show began promisingly, with Jennifer Lopez doing several bars of her tune “Waiting for Tonight“, afterward quitting the music to pronounce having a not-quite-straight face, “Tonight’s not about me”. They also acknowledged their upcoming break from the group, which was announced earlier this year – months after singer Zayn Malik revealed he was leaving the band.
Iglesias’ win was the only victory for Latin Americans on the night, with no other Latinos nominated in any of the many categories. Jared Leto gave an emotional speech on behalf of the AMAs, remembering victims of terrorist attacks around the world as he called for peace. Taylor Swift was the big victor of the night and her fans went insane after she won. The 21-year-old show star stomped his means by way of three of his tracks – Where Are U Now?, What Do You Imply & Sorry – at the Microsoft Theater in L.A. on Sunday. Also taking home two awards was Nicki Minaj who was named favourite rap/hip-hop artist, while album The Pinkprint scooped the favourite rap/hip-hop album award.
