TCU survives Kansas State’s upset bid

He has one touchdown catch, three receptions and 42 yards receiving. The score was Green’s seventh of the season. While Hubener finished the game, the fact remains that every quarterback on the K-State depth chart is banged up heading into this week’s meeting with the #2 TCU Horned Frogs.

Devontae Booker rushed for 222 yards, and the Utes defense registered six turnovers, pressuring and picking off Jared Goff five times.

“Doctson, the 6’3” and 190lbs mismatch lined up wide each week, was his typically unstoppable self in hauling in eight catches for 155 yards and two more touchdowns for the powerful Horned Frogs offense. Despite a 23 carry, 245 yard performance from Mike Warren the Cyclones abandoned the run at inopportune times when the game was within reach and paid for it due to Richardson’s poor performance behind center. It didn’t work. Hubener, who became the first Wildcat since Collin Klein in 2012 to have four rushing touchdowns, was 13-33 passing for 157 yards and an interception. He completed only 2-of-4 passes for 16 yards. The Jayhawk offense just didn’t move, with no running game to slow things down and not enough pop down the field.

Instead, Boykin started playing the Heisman Trophy candidate that he actually is and these Horned Frogs scored 35 points in the second half en route to a thrilling, if not highly stressful, 52-45 victory in front of a stunned crowd of 50,000-plus at one of the most hard places to play in the Big 12. The rush defense slumbered against Iowa State, but Patrick Mahomes did more than their share of picking up the slack.

Boykin has looked impressive all season. A Joe Hubener touchdown run from a yard out, though, pushed the lead back out to 42-31 with 12:21. “The touchdown was the Wildcats” fifth of the game, marking a new season high. The pick was Hubener’s second interception of the season. Add running back Aaron Green and a stout defense, and it’s easy to see why the Frogs are where they are. The drive was highlighted a 24-yard reception by Doctson.

“They’re a team that can go fast, and if you are not paying attention, they will go deep on you no matter what the time is”, Kansas State linebacker Elijah Lee said. Jones led the way on the drive, rushing for 26 yards to set up the score. However, an equally stunning comeback lifted the Horned Frogs to a come-from-behind 52-45 win that kept their playoff hopes very much alive.

He followed that up with a two-point conversion. The junior led a K-State ground attack that was responsible for controlling the clock, dominating the time of possession and essentially keeping the ball out of TCU’s hands. West Virginia will provide the biggest test to date, and despite what they were saying Monday in Waco, the Bears still haven’t forgotten their penalty-filled loss in Morgantown last season.

This was an ugly game in the first half to be sure, particularly on the part of West Virginia. He would also go a ideal 6-for-6 on PAT attempts. TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin connected with Doctson for a 55-yard touchdown for the game-winner with 1:10 remaining.
