Team Canada has added Ryan O’Reilly to its roster for the World Cup of Hockey to replace the injured Tyler Seguin.

The preliminary round of the World Cup of Hockey begins September 17. Ryan O’Reilly will take Seguin’s spot on Team Canada. Sep.

Seguin has missed a combined 21 regular-season games over the past two seasons. He suited up again a night later and participated in practice on Tuesday morning, but was evidently not well enough to continue. While losing a talented player such as Seguin would hurt, this is a rare squad that can overcome the loss at center thanks to its impressive depth at the position. His Dallas teammate, Jamie Benn, was also forced to pull out of the World Cup because of injury (core muscle surgery), and was replaced by San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture prior to training camp.

O’Reilly, a former second round pick of the Colorado Avalanche from the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, was dealt to the Sabres after the 2014-15 season and signed to a lengthy extension with the Atlantic Division club.

Seguin registered 33 goals and 70 points in 72 games last season – second on the Stars only to Jamie Benn (89 points in 82 games.) Benn earlier was forced to withdraw from the tournament because he hadn’t fully recovered from surgery in July to fix a core muscle.

The Canadians are rich with offensive weaponry regardless.

O’Reilly, 25, was one of only three players to win back-to-back IIHF World Championship gold with Canada in 2015 and 2016.
