J.T. Compher had a chance at bronze, but Team USA fell to Russian Federation 7-2.
Next year’s tournament will be co-hosted by Paris and the German city of Cologne in what will be the 81st edition of the ice hockey world championship.
Matt Duchene (Colorado Avalanche) scored into an empty net with one second remaining and assisted on McDavid’s goal in the first period.
Cam Talbot shut the Finns out in Moscow, but only had 16 shots to save as Canada struck gold once again. This is the first time that Canada’s won back-to-back gold medals at the worlds since 2003-2004. Still, that’s a step up from previous year; after falling in the quarterfinals round at the 2015 men’s tournament, it’s nice to see Finland take the podium once again.
Despite the final scoreline, the Americans outshot Russian Federation 30-29.
“It would have been a good performance for me if we had won the cup”, said Shipachyov.
“We’ve executed our game plan nearly perfectly today and that made the difference”, Perry said. “Until now… the pressure was serious”.
Russian forward Sergei Mozyakin scored two goals, with captain Pavel Datsyuk registering three assists.
Finland forward Jussi Jokinen said: “They played one of their best games of the tournament, and we weren’t at our best”.
The third period was a nerve breaking stretch seeing both teams looking to score on power plays, but it was Canada’s shot puck to glide peacefully into the net of the goalless net with two seconds alarm before the final siren.
“This one stings. Obviously, you don’t like to go out on a losing note”, US forward Nick Foligno said.
Finland has now lost in four medal games (two gold, two bronze) since their last gold medal at this tournament in 2011.

“We can’t win (the world championship) every year”. “It’s better to win a medal than not”.
