Twenty-old O’Connor finished just three tenths of a second adrift of Hosszu but the time represented a new British record by 0.69 seconds.

But it wasn’t good enough to beat Hungary’s answer to the Iron Lady: Katinka Hosszu.

“It feels pretty unreal”, O’Connor said. “It just shows what determination can do and all the hard work has paid off but I would not have been able to do it without my unbelievable team”.

“Sometimes you think ‘is it my time?’ It just shows what determination can do and all the hard work has paid off, but I would not have been able to do it without my wonderful team”.

“The more you race against the best stars in the world, the more confidence you get”.

O’Connor was the first to win silver in the 200m individual medley and her success was swiftly followed by the men’s team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor has produced a huge personal best to claim silver in the women’s 200m individual medley at the Olympic Games.

The swimming medals came just a few days after Peaty won the 100m breaststroke and Jazz Carlin collected a silver medal in the 400m freestyle.
