Team GB wins first gold medal at Rio Olympics
Our junior video producer Cassandra Nelson, together with Derby Telegraph reporter Bethany Knowles, went out to speak to people in Derby city centre to get their thoughts on Peaty’s triumph at the Rio Olympics. “If we’re not going that I don’t really see the point”.

“I hope their success will inspire many more of the UK’s world class team to fulfil their potential and bring home a medal, just as all those who are competing for the United Kingdom in Rio are an inspiration to many more youngsters back home”.
“It’s going to be good to go back to Repton, go back to Loughborough and pick up on those areas we can improve”. That’s probably the best-executed race of my life.
But two were won on the second night of swimming finals here, with Peaty leading the way and Jazz Carlin adding silver in the 400m freestyle.
Mavis, it turns out, is also something of a social media savant, running her own Twitter page that is filled with heartwarming tweets about her grandson.
“I can’t wait to get home now to my nan and give her a massive hug”.
It all began just hours before he took to the pool. It’s steadily sinking in, and I’m starting to get used to him being on telly all the time.
“But for now enjoy it, get this relay done and hopefully get another good performance for Team GB”.
“That was one of many motivations coming into this Games”, Peaty added.
A camera crew from the BBC was on hand to capture her erupting with joy as she watched her grandson make Olympic history.
The time difference from Brazil meant that most of the country was asleep while Adam swam to victory.
The 21-year-old world champion, who clocked 57.55 seconds in Saturday’s heats, sliced another hefty chunk off his mark to finish in 57.13 and open his country’s medal account at the Games. Reigning champion Cameron van der Burgh finished second, completing the swim in 58.69 seconds.
“Four years ago I was sat in the stand cheering Team GB on but now I’m actually part of the team and to come away with a silver medal is absolutely awesome”.

“I’m very excited for when he comes home, and exhausted”.
