Team USA shooter Virginia Thrasher wins first gold medal in Rio Olympics
Sarah Scherer has had two operations since 2014 to fix three herniated disks in her back. “I’m very grateful to stand up on that podium and hear the USA’s national anthem” said gold medal victor Ginny Thrasher.

“I get home 20 hours before the first class, so I’ll be in physics at 8:30 am”, she said.
“I’ve competed in four Games, this one might be my last one”, the 37-year-old said.
But Ginny Thrasher became passionate about shooting during a family hunting trip when she was a young teenager, she told the Richmond Times Dispatch newspaper. One of her first experiences was with her grandfather, father and two brothers.
Thrasher deflected questions about gun control in her country, saying the “controversialness” of the gun debate “is a distraction from our sport”.
Thrasher attends the University of West Virginia, where she helped the Mountaineers rifle team win its fourth straight national title while winning two individual championships.
“I didn’t really care much about the Olympics”, Thrasher told The Post last month, after she qualified for the US team.
She didn’t flinch at the sport’s brightest spotlight – or an air horn.
The results: 1. Virginia Thrasher (U.S.) 208.0 points, 2.
WOMEN FIRST: France won the first rugby match at the Olympics in 92 years and the first ever for women beating Spain 24-7 to begin the six-day sevens tournament.
Thrasher stayed in the top spot as her competitors fell off, consistently hitting 10s despite a fan blowing an air horn at random times.
But Thrasher, whose first shot of the day was a ideal 10.9, never appeared to let the pressure – or the stellar field – get to her.
“This is very special for me”, Thrasher added.
It was an intense match for Ms. Thrasher, Du and Yi for the Medal contention. Shooter Ginny Thrasher pulled off an upset in the women’s ten-meter air rifle event this Morning. Yi won Olympic gold in the 2012 London Games. China’s Du Li and Yi Siling won silver and bronze, respectively.
