“The U.S. women swim to defend their title in the 4×100-meter medley relay in Rio”.
Lilly King, who spoke out against doping and then backed it up with a win over twice-suspended Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova, closes her first Olympics with two golds and a silver.
The winning U.S. 4×100-meter medley team, with anchor Simone Manuela, Kathleen Baker, Lilly King and Dana Vollmer was recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee for nabbing the country’s 1,000th gold medal in Summer Olympics history. The Olympic champ surged to the lead at the 50-meter mark, and touched the wall behind Russian Federation, in second place.
Australia took the silver, beating bronze medallists Denmark by just 0.01 of a second. Vollmer’s leg was when the US took a lead and never relinquished it, Manuel jumping into the pool 0.10 ahead of the Danes for the anchor.
“That’s just so incredibly amazing and it really makes me think about all the generations of Olympic teams and athletes that I’ve watched and inspiration that I’ve had”, Vollmer said.

The U.S. women held each other as Manuel came out of the pool, all four of them hugging at once, the arena bursting into cheers. It marked the U.S.’ second straight gold in the event.?
