Tearful Clinton Vows to Tighten Gun Regulations

Clinton told reporters earlier that as president she would use executive action to pass her proposals “if Congress will not act”.

“We cannot sit by while more people die”, Clinton tweeted.

Her voice broke as she called on to stage a mother named Nicole Hockey, whose child was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in 2012.

During a campaign appearance at a town hall, Clinton denounced what she called the “extremism” that she said has come to characterize the debate over the nation’s gun laws.

“This is a classic Clinton attempt to distract from her record of putting classified information at risk and jeopardizing our national security, all of which the FBI is investigating”, said spokeswoman Emily Schillinger.

If pro-gun lobbies and politicians tried to block these new measures, Mrs Clinton said that as president she would take executive action to force them through Congress.

Clinton did not seem to notice that requiring background checks for private gun transfers makes no sense as a response to the Oregon massacre, since the weapons used in that attack were legally purchased from a licensed dealer by the killer and a relative. He supported the 2013 law to expand background checks and ban certain types of weapons, but in 1993 he voted against the Brady bill, which established mandatory background checks and a five-day waiting period.

People want to see that “we stand with every mom and dad back at home …” Criminals don’t follow gun laws. And before Democratic audiences, she speaks of her deep ties to the White House and party – a contrast, though she doesn’t mention it, with Sanders. For that reason, he’s often said it’s an issue that should be decided at the state and local level, not the federal.

“It’s time for us to say we’re better than this”.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton greets voters during a campaign stop at the Manchester Community College, Monday, October 5, 2015, in Manchester, N.H.

Michael Sommers, a 65-year-old Democrat from California City, said he hasn’t made up his mind because “we’ve got a year to go”.

Sanders has positioned himself as the favorite of progressives on liberal priorities like campaign finance reform andtrade, but gun control has been an exception.

“I think that would be about as stupid a thing as you could possibly do”, said Mr Bloomberg, who threw his political weight and philanthropical wallet behind gun control as a co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
