That Sandy Alderson has a man crush on Tim Tebow is now abundantly clear: in case you haven’t heard, Tebow agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets today, and will report to the Mets Instructional League at Port St. Lucie, FL, which begins on or near September 18.

Tebow will begin his professional career in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with the Mets’ instructional league team. In his National Football League career, which included regular season appearances with the Broncos and the New York Jets, Tebow appeared in 34 games, throwing for 2,422 total yards and 17 touchdowns. He was a backup for 2012, was released and later was let go during preseason by New England in 2013 and Philadelphia in 2015.

Fox Sports reported this week that around eight teams were showing interest in Tebow, with Atlanta Braves general manager saying “there’s no risk” in signing the former Heisman-winning quarterback. However, the network and ESPN announced shortly after the signing that Tebow could continue to serve as an analyst for the network. He was impressive during his showcase event, where he hit well against David Aardsma, a former Major League pitcher who is trying to make a comeback himself. They are now overloaded on corner outfield/first base types.

Many viewed Tebow’s attempt at a major league baseball life as a PR stunt, something to grasp the attention of millions. “As Mr. Alderson said, you have to give it a break”.

The 29-year-old has called recruiters Major League Baseball teams to display in a public workout.

It is possible that the Mets could sent Tebow to the Arizona Fall League, as the Mets now have one spot to fill, but that spot will more than likely belong to a pitcher, according to Jon Morosi.

Alderson says Tim Tebow could represent the #Mets in the Arizona Fall League and a Caribbean Winter League, if he progresses fast enough.

As junior at Nease High School (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) in 2005, Tebow batted.448 with four home runs and 25 RBI and was named All-First Coast by The Florida Times-Union.
