Meanwhile, the latest annual shakeup of the DJSI released Thursday also left Intel, Samsung Electronics and British American Tobacco as the largest companies to lose out, with all three cut from the 2016 world group index.

“With 2016 likely to be the hottest year on record, investors are again reminded that companies’ environmental and sustainability efforts are crucial to their financial outcomes”, said David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the Index Committee, S&P Dow Jones Indices. This year, the DJSI World – one of the most highly regarded sustainability indices – included 316 global companies identified as leaders in the areas of sustainable economic, environmental and social performance.

A DJSI statement said the company had successfully linked its sustainability priorities with its overall business strategy.

DJSI evaluates companies based on a variety of criteria, including transparency, corporate governance, risk and crisis management, environmental management and performance, climate strategy, water risks, stakeholder engagement, local community development, labour practices, human rights and safety. Only 12 other companies from the region were listed on this index – seven from Brazil and five from Colombia. It believes that the index is a benchmark for its asset managers who integrate sustainability considerations while making decisions.

“Having been a member of the DJSI World for the past ten years, this accolade truly demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainability leadership”, he said.
