Technical problems ground American Airlines flights

In a statement released by the airline Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson announced the problem was fixed and apologized to passengers for the inconvenience. The agency said it was not an FAA issue, but an internal problem at American.

Flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul will also not depart for Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami or Chicago until at least 2:30 p.m., according to the FAA.

The American outage began around noon EST (GMT1600) and caused the company to ground all flights into and out of at least three of its major hubs.

American Airlines tweeted that their “connectivity issues have been resolved”.

Greg Thomas posted a picture of the chaos at the American Airlines check-in area at Chicago’s O’Hare international Airport. However, he says the airlines rely entirely on computer systems for the whole process from check-in until they land.

American turned to Twitter to respond to customers who might be stranded at airports around the country.

American had to ground about 75 flights over two days this past April due to problems with an iPad app used by pilots.

However, that didn’t stop the flight delays.

Combining technology systems is a difficult feat that has tripped up other airlines, notably leading to several outages at United Airlines since it merged with Continental Airlines in 2010.

American has made meticulous plans to keep away from an analogous destiny.

Earlier this year, United Airlines experienced two computer glitches a month apart from each other that forced the carrier to ground its flights.
