Cruz replied that the government wouldn’t have to borrow that money, and that instead, he has a plan to reduce federal spending.
Framing this as an economic issue for many Americans, Cruz asked how the press would feel if “people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down wages”.
Cruz said he wouldn’t bail them out. He proposed getting rid of subsidies on products such as sugar, then using the resulting savings to increase military expenditure.
“And I would point out, by the way, everyone talks about how compassionate it is to grant amnesty to 12 million people here illegally”, Cruz said.
Chris Christie put it fairly bluntly.
Later Rubio defended the per-child credit in his tax plan, attacked by a few conservatives as doing nothing for growth, by saying his most important role was as a parent and, in a nod to cultural conservatives, “You can’t have a strong nation without strong values, and no one is born with strong values”.
“The current system isn’t fair”.
According to Christie, there should be no room for special interest tax deductions favoring the wealthy.
“It’s three agencies of government when I get there that are gone – Commerce, Education and the um, what’s the third one there?”
