Ted Cruz wins Republican presidential caucuses in Maine

Trump had gained some support from the state’s party leadership last month, when Maine Gov. Paul LePage endorsed him, shortly after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced his backing of the billionaire. “I’ve been sitting here for five minutes and two of the three questions you’ve asked have been about Donald Trump”, Rubio said during a question-and-answer session.

The caucus format, which requires a greater commitment on the part of voters, also has tended to favor the Texas senator.

Democratic contests award delegates in proportion to the vote, so even the loser gets some.

But rival Cruz said at an event in Idaho, which votes on Tuesday, that “the scream you hear-the howl you hear from Washington, DC – is utter terror for what we the people are doing together”.

Senator of Vermont Bernie Sanders claimed victories in the Kansas and Nebraska caucuses, while frontrunner Hillary Clinton won in the Louisiana primary, The Associated Press reported.

Clinton has a lead of about 200 pledged delegates over Sanders, while Trump leads Cruz by around 100 delegates and is about 200 delegates ahead of the third place candidate Rubio of Florida.

On the Democratic side, Clinton is farther along than Trump on the march to her party’s nomination.

Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, called Trump a phony and a fraud who was playing American voters for suckers, and 2008 nominee John McCain, a USA senator from Arizona, said Trump’s foreign policy views were uninformed and unsafe. “They’ve got to be very careful”, Trump said in Wichita before the vote. “He has not been able to win”. And he has not been able to win.

“I like Bernie, but I think Hillary had the best chance of winning”, she said. “I want him one on one”. “That would be so much fun”. He has contrasted his steadfast conservative record to Trump’s shifting positions on such issues as abortion and past campaign donations to Democrats, including Clinton.

“Trump’s history as a con artist is being exposed”, said spokesman Alex Conant.

In Maine, Cruz won by a comfortable margin over Trump.

At his news conference in Florida, where Rubio is under intense pressure to win later this month, Trump also congratulated Cruz for his victories.

In Maine, Mr Cruz won by a comfortable margin over Mr Trump.

Ted Cruz is making a small dent in Donald Trump’s lead in the race for delegates to the Republican National Convention this summer. “What we’re seeing is the public coming together, libertarians coming together, men and women who love the Constitution coming together and uniting and standing as one behind this campaign”.

According to AP projections, Trump has at least 378 delegates, compared to 295 for Cruz.

Both Democrats and Republicans are wondering whether their presidential caucuses in Kansas will be rocky soil for their front-runners
