Third play: USC pulled back to within five points midway through the fourth quarter when McCaffery found himself wide open across the middle again, this time carrying the Hogan pass into the end zone for a 28-yard score that essentially clinched it.
The Trojans responded with a 65-yard, seven-play touchdown drive to cut the deficit to 27-22 after a 12-yard touchdown scamper by Kessler, however, McCaffrey sealed Stanford’s fate as Pac-12 champions in the remainder of the fourth quarter.
“The guy I had posted on my wall growing up”, McCaffrey said. Cravens said. “He catches the ball in the backfield, make the guy miss, and take it to the house, and rush the ball inside and on the edge and really score with any play they draw for him”.
Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey played one of the best games in college football history, amassing a stupefying 461 all-purpose yards while throwing, rushing, and catching a touchdown.
McCaffrey’s 3,496 all-purpose yards set a new NCAA, single-season record, coincidentally breaking the record previously held by the father of one of McCaffrey’s Cardinal teammates: Barry Sanders Jr.
“I was put in situations to be successful”, McCaffrey said. “Even to be mentioned in the same category is definitely an honor”.
After being thoroughly outplayed for the first 25 minutes, the Trojans got right back into the game with three straight scoring drives.
It was somewhat awesome USC led 16-13 in the third quarter after being dominated by Stanford for the entire first half.
After his Trojans fell to Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship game, Palmer made his first appearance in front of the Arizona media wearing a cardinal red jersey – more accurately, Cardinal with a capital C. Stanford had a first-and goal at the USC 5 on that possession but had to settle for the field goal.
USC came into the game with a ton of momentum on their side, but that quickly came to a halt when their offense couldn’t move the chains against Stanford in the first half. But McCaffrey kept Stanford in contention with a 67-yard pass from Hogan to McCaffrey.

“We were in man-to-man there”, Hawkins said, “and McCaffrey just lined up on one of our linebackers and won”.
