After killing her, Vogel said “she was then carried downstairs to the recycling bin” where her body was dumped, “in a way that was not obvious or readily apparent”.

Neighbors have come together to build a memorial for Madyson on the sidewalk.
Surveillance video showed Madyson by the mailboxes at 5:05 p.m.by the living spaces near the trails by the San Lorenzo River.
An 8-year-old girl who vanished outside her California apartment complex was lured to her death by a 15-year-old boy who then tossed her body into a recycling bin, Santa Cruz police said.
“At approximately 7:55 p.m., and this is extraordinarily heartbreaking news that I’m about to give to you, our detectives discovered the body of a young female inside of a dumpster at the complex located behind me”, said Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel on Monday night. And on Tuesday, Dan Kerman talked with some of them, who they said knew the suspect. Her disappearance appeared suspicious, Blaschke said, but police do not necessarily suspect foul play.
“I thought she was in the courtyard”, Jordan said. Maybe she got bored waiting for her play date, maybe she found another friend. “But we had no luck”. “My staff was so hopeful that we were going to find her – alive”. PHOTOS: Police make grim discovery in search for Santa Cruz girlIt took the start of the second phase of the mission – when it changed from search to recovery – when the 8-year-old was found. “It was a secondary and a more thorough canvas of the area that revealed Maddy’s body”, Vogel said.
The suspect was being held in the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Detention Center, according to Vogel, who said he did not know about any history of mental illness for the boy.
When officers were escorting the boy in handcuffs Monday night, a woman, who appeared to be his mother, was hysterical and in disbelief that he was being taken away. About 250 people live there, including 50 children who have grown up under the watchful eyes of all the parents.
“The residents are almost all artists and they’re all from Santa Cruz County”, said Warren Reed, assistant vice president of The John Stewart Co., which manages the property.
Artist Kirby Scudder said people at the centre are devastated.
“We lost not one kid, but two kids over the weekend, and both parents are in an absolute state of shock”, said Scudder, who described the suspect as admired, well-liked and well-rounded.
Santa Cruz Mayor Don Lane said in a statement that “thousands of members of this community are joining with Madyson’s loved ones in grieving this loss”.
Santa Cruz, with a population of 62,000, is perhaps best known for its boardwalk and liberal politics.

When the identity of the alleged perpetrator was revealed within the community, numerous residents and artists could not believe the news.
