Teen bitten by marine animal in Murrells Inlet

Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Rescue says there was a marine animal bite around 12:30, in which a 15-year-old boy was bitten on the hand and leg.

The teen is at least the 11th person reported to be bitten or attacked by sharks while swimming on the beaches of the Carolinas this summer. “So we helped him out of the water – said he was bit by a shark and it looked like it”, Ashley Hedtke said.

According to local media reports, the boy was surfing in the water when he was bitten on his leg by a shark.

Sharks are in coastal waters all the time – they tend to feed behind the breakers or along steep drop-offs. The teen was transported to an area hospital for his injuries, which are not life-threatening.

Thursday’s attack comes just one day after a 9-year-old girl was bit by a shark at Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

In June, two minors in North Carolina lost limbs in separate shark attacks.
