Officers say the suspect’s condition deteriorated and despite live-saving efforts by EMS personnel, the suspect died in the back of the ambulance.
The teenager, identified as Terrell Day, died in the back of a police ambulance, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to NBC News.
An ambulance was summoned, but Day died in the back of that vehicle.
Metro Police officers and Cumberland officers were called to the 10200 block of E. Washington Street just before 1 p.m. Saturday, after the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at a loss prevention officer at Burlington Coat Factory, then ran away. Day was found lying in a grassy area behind a gas station by a Cumberland Police Department officer. The EMS crew assessed him and determined he could be transported to the Arrestee Processing Center via jail wagon.
Miramonti said a “full internal investigation” has been launched but that he was “confident the highest level of response and care was provided”. A cause of death has not yet been determined.
Police say homicide detectives and the crime lab are investigating. “When the jail wagon arrived, the suspect began to complain again of breathing problems”, the police said.
‘He had no asthma, ‘ Askew told WTHR.
Ask also doesn’t believe her son would have been shoplifting or that he would have had a weapon.
