Teen nightclub shooting not an act of terrorism, officials say

Florida prep basketball star Stefan Strawder was one of two people killed after multiple assailants shot at least 16 people at a Fort Myers nightclub early Monday morning.

The two victims killed in a shooting outside a Florida nightclub have been identified as 14-year-old Shawn Achilles and 18-year-old Ste’fan Strawder, Fort Myers police said.

Fort Myers police and the Lee County’s Sheriff’s Office were canvassing the area for other people who may have been involved, the statement said.

Police in Fort Myers have detained three people in relation to the shooting.

Police said they want to talk to some of the victims who were treated and released from the hospital and haven’t yet spoken with investigators.

The club hosted a teen event Sunday night called “Swimsuit and Glow Party”.

The party was advertised on a flyer posted to Club Blu’s Facebook page.

Club owners posted a statement on Facebook about the incident.

The deadly incident comes just over a month after a gunman opened fire at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, killing more than 49 people in the deadliest mass shooting in United States history.

Fort Myers police say the shooting at a nightclub that left two dead was not an act of terrorism.

“Her dodging bullets and running, dropping in between cars, it’s ridiculous that these kids have to go through this, ” Gary said.

“Instead of getting school clothes and all that”, she said of the teens’ parents, “they’re making funeral arrangements”.

“We did everything we could to make sure these kids were safe”, Filardi said, adding that at least eight armed guards were there for security.

-One person was reportedly injured after shots were fired at a residence near the nightclub, but it is not yet clear whether the shootings are connected.

The fatal shooting of a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer was not part of a planned ambush, but the work of “another criminal” trying to evade arrest, authorities said Wednesday. Police haven’t made any arrests, however they did detain three people of interest.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced he was heading to Fort Myers to meet with officials there.

But the area is now “deemed safe”, a police statement said. Tragically, the victims of the shootings ranged from the ages of 12 to 27. The other scene is on Parkway Street.
