Teen on the run planned farewell party
After Ethan and Tonya Couch disappeared, Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson, who is running for reelection in 2016, launched a national media blitz, listing Ethan Couch among the counties most wanted fugitive and inviting federal authorities to help in the search.

Mexican authorities said they had been working with the US Marshals Service since Saturday to locate Couch and his mother. Couch and his mother, Tonya, had been on the lam for weeks, evading authorities after the teen violated the terms his probation.
Couch’s defense team, which included psychologist Dr. G. Dick Miller, argued that the teen suffered from “affluenza”, meaning his irresponsible behavior and lifestyle were a product of his affluent upbringing and “profoundly dysfunctional” parents. The condition is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association, and its invocation drew ridicule.
Ethan Couch, 18, dyed his fair hair black to disguise himself in Puerto Vallarta, while his mother, Tonya Couch (right) reportedly cut her hair short.
“So the legal issue is: Can the prosecutor move this case to adult court and try to get adult sanctions, get some state prison time”. Agents set up a surveillance operation in the area and found the Couches that night.
On Monday evening, two people matching the Couches’ description were spotted and intercepted.
“Crossing over to Mexico is not a hard thing to do”, Anderson said, pointing out that USA authorities do not check who is leaving the U.S. and instead focus on who is coming in. That would have been a violation of his probation, the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office previously said.
“They had planned to disappear”.
Anderson previously voiced his suspicions that Couch and his mother had made it out of the country, saying they had held a “going-away party”. He would not give details about the event including how many people attended.
“He was, at best, looking at a life of exile”, Sheriff Anderson said of Mr. Couch. He said the two did not register when entering Mexico and it was not clear where they came in.
When asked about the change in Couch’s appearance Sheriff Anderson said, “We certainly talked numerous times during the investigation that we believed that they [family] would do everything they could to change their appearance”. He said authorities have no evidence that Couch’s father, who owns a sheet metal factory in North Texas, was involved.
Authorities had begun searching for Couch and his mother after he missed a mandatory appointment with his probation officer on December 10. If found to be drinking, Couch’s probation could be revoked and he could face up to four months in jail.
As of now, the most severe punishment Couch could face is 120 days in adult jail, Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson said at a press conference Tuesday. Six months later, Ethan, then 16, was sentenced to 10 years probation for the crime. Ethan will go to a juvenile detention facility.
“They are going to be sent back to their country, given that they were in Mexico improperly”, Ariel Vera said. The pair had entered Mexico as tourists and had exceeded their allowed length of stay, Ramirez said.
“I would like for him to be held accountable as I’ve said all along”.
He and his mother, Tonya Couch, who fled with him, are expected to arrive back in Texas on Wednesday.
In June 2013, a drunken Couch was speeding on a road south of Fort Worth when he crashed into an SUV at the side of the road, killing four people and injuring several others, including passengers in his pick-up truck.
He pleaded guilty to four counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury.

“I think it is completely consistent from Tonya’s attitude from day one that she will do whatever it takes to avoid accountability for her child”, he said. She and Ethan had been renting a house in Fort Worth since August 2014, according to her landlord, James Walker.
