Teen surfer attacked by shark in Florida

A teenage surfer has been hospitalized and was forced to undergo surgery after being bitten on the left hand by a shark In the Atlantic Ocean off Florida’s coast and sustaining serious injuries.

The boy suffered “pretty significant lacerations” from what was described as a 4- or 5-foot blacktip shark, patrol spokesman Capt. Aaron Jenkins told the Orlando Sentinel. After being out for about an hour, Toomsoo, 12, said he recognized one of friends needed help.

A teenager fought a shark off with his bare hands after it bit him.

The 14-year-old boy was with four other surfers testing out a new surfboard when it happened. “It just gets me scared to have one of my friends go through that”.

“A guy came up and took off his shirt and wrapped it around his hand”.

“This area, it’s kind of a common area for these small sharks…”

WFTV New Smyrna Beach, Florida has had more than 10 shark attacks this year.

The victim said he punched the shark after it bit him to get away from it.

“The sharks, they can’t differentiate between someone’s hand… and a few kind of small fish”.

This is the 11th shark bite in Volusia County this year, Jenkins said.
