Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows tops box office
Out of the Shadows landed number 1 at the weekend box office, grossing $35.3 million.

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was a surprise hit, finished with a US$195 million domestic gross and US$493.2 million worldwide in 2014. The opening is nearly half of the $65 million start its predecessor enjoyed in 2014, a further indication that after only two movies, audiences are already tired of this TMNT incarnation. Produced again by Michael Bay and starring Megan Fox alongside the pizza-eating, crime-fighting creatures of the title, the new film lagged behind the more than $65-million opening of the first “Ninja Turtles” movie in August 2014. The latest X-Men film fared better internationally, taking in $84.4 million over the weekend. Me Before You, a romance starring Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke, came in second with over $7 million.
The family friendly film topped the chart with $35.3 million from 3,701 theaters, more than 46 percent behind the 2014 reboot.
Alice Through the Looking Glass took fourth with $10.7 million ($50.8 million total) in its second weekend. It will need to perform really well over seas to match its $170 million budget.
Meanwhile, the Lonely Island mockumentary “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping“, earned $4.6 million to take eighth place. With a relatively low-cost budget of $21 million, Popstar could find its legs (and its money) beyond the theatrical realm as a cult hit when it’s finally released to retailers.
The animated Angry Birds Movie rounded out the top five with $9.8 million.

Based on a best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes with a promising A grade on CinemaScore, Me Before You looks to cruise through the early summer season on strong word of mouth as the only romantic film entering wide release for the foreseeable future.
