Soon after the match, Smith announced he will miss the remaining three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals in Sri Lanka as he is returning home to rest up and prepare for the upcoming tours.

Several ex-Australian cricketers, including former skipper Michael Clarke, have criticised the decision.

SLC in a statement extended its appreciation to the batsman wishing him all the best.

Three days ago, there was no reason to expect that this third ODI would be particularly headline-grabbing – at least, not beyond Dambulla hosting day-night cricket for the first time in six years.

‘This is a great leadership opportunity for David, he has really embraced his role as vice-captain and we are confident he will do a great job in Steve’s place’.

Australia T20 squad: David Warner (c), Scott Boland, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Chris Lynn, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa. “If we can score 40 or 50 runs off him, we feel that we can catch up against the other bowlers”.

Except for the IPL season during April and May, Australian teams have figured in one form of the game every month since November.

Dilshan, who innovated the famous Dilscoop, has featured in 87 Tests, 329 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for Sri Lanka so far, and he has scored a total of 39 centuries across all formats.

Sri Lanka must come from behind in their ODI series against World Cup champions Australia, in the Second One Day International that will stream live Wednesday, with skipper Angelo Mathews and his team attempting to figure out how to break what is now a four match ODI losing streak.

Australia, who were chasing a record 289 for victory at R Premadasa Stadium, were bowled out for 206 in 47.2 overs with Matthew Wade top-scoring with 76 runs.

He was the fourth Sri Lanka batsman, after Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, to cross 10,000 ODI runs.

Dilshan captained Sri Lanka for two years between May 2010 and January 2012 and was an effective off-spin bowler, picking up 106 wickets at an average of 44.84.
