“Saturday night, April 23, 2016, at approximately 11:00 P.M., an individual arrived at the Antigo High School Prom with a rifle and began shooting while outside the entrance to the building”.
According to a statement from the Unified School District of Antigo, a thorough search of the high school has been completed and school will resume on Monday so students and staff can have access to support from counselors. Students weren’t released until about 2 a.m. Sunday, three hours after the shooting. Pastor Debbie Pimm called on the congregation to pray for all involved in the tragedy, from students to parents, to police, to the family of the shooter.
In Arizona, two police officers are in stable condition and a trespassing suspect is dead after a shooting Saturday at a Wal-Mart in a Phoenix suburb, authorities said.
Officers who were patrolling the parking lot heard the shots, and one of the officers opened fire on the gunman.
Friends expressed shock that Wagner was the suspect. He described Wagner as an “all-around good guy” who enjoyed hanging out with friends.
Mills says Wagner was interested in guns and wanted to become a hunter, and had gone through a hunter safety course a few years ago. He said Wagner was raised by his mother and grandparents and was still living at home. “The police force and everybody in charge around here and the school, major respect for them because they did great”.
Chief Eric Roller, from Antigo Police Department, confirmed in a statement: “A subject showed up with a rifle on the outside of the building and started shooting”.
“Before I knew it, there were cops in the gym, keeping us calm and safe, and we were in the corner, together”, says student Marisa Young. One of them shot the person with the rifle, ending the threat, according to police.
Wagner was taken into custody but died later at a hospital.
Antigo is a city of about 8,000 people 35 miles northeast of Wausau and 150 miles north of Milwaukee.
Dewey added that Wagner was dating someone at Antigo, though they’d recently broken up.
The girl student has now been released from the hospital, but the boy student had to have surgery in the hospital.
