Lamar will join George Clooney on the inaugural episode, which airs September 8 on CBS.

Colbert said at the Television Critics Association’s mid year press visit.
“I just pray [Trump] will still be in the race on September 8, that he doesn’t do anything risky like ride motorcycles”. I’m not going to name any names but I want to do jokes on Donald Trump and I have no venue.
Given that Colbert has brought over his staff from “The Colbert Report” over to this show, he did say that there will be a lot of political humor on “The Late Show”.
“I just hope that he’s taking his vitamins”.
Colbert also said that he is not looking to compete with other talk show hosts but rather himself, while mocking his lack of athleticism in the process. During his TCA panel, Colbert discussed plans for his upcoming “The Late Show” debut, revealed his first guests, dished about advice from his predecessor David Letterman and teased some Donald Trump material.
That’s all you really need to hear about the current mindset of Stephen Colbert. “That is much closer to how I took in my art”, Colbert said. “I hope everybody does the same and has fantastic ratings”. “I am going to do a show and hopefully people will share it”. “And I also pray that no one puts that candle anywhere near his hair”. Today we got an example of what the real Stephen Colbert will be like, and the biggest difference might be when he’s interviewing guests. “I get to drop character and this was the one present that felt like a promotion”. Colbert said that it was only appropriate to welcome the rapper since Lamar was his last musical guest on “The Colbert Report“.
“I said, ‘Is there anything you would have changed?’ He said, ‘I would like to have tried the desk on the other side.'” So Colbert called his set designer and moved the desk.
Tassler said the online interest can sometimes drive viewers to the actual show. When Steve Carell [and all the former correspondents did the group hug] we were all chanting, ‘Made him cry! Later, he showed up at the CBS All-Stars Party at the Pacific Design Center, entertaining more questions from an incessant crowd.

When he takes over The Late Show it will not be as the character Colbert played for nine years on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report – a prospect the 51-year-old comedian is excited about.
