Friday, the high will be near 99, with a heat index as high as 109, according to the weather service.
The weather service has declared an excessive heat warning starting today and continuing into Friday evening, and agency’s are providing ways to beat the heat as temperatures fall merely into the 70s overnight.
A sweltering “heat dome” will hover over much of the nation later this week, with some places forecast to reach up to a risky 115 degrees. We take heat seriously, it is the number one weather killer annually.
The meteorological phenomenon, which will build through Friday, is expected to roast the Midwest, the northern/central Plains, and beyond with 100-plus degree temperatures.
An excessive heat warning is in effect from 1:00 Wednesday afternoon to 8:00 Saturday evening for southeast Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri.
High temperatures and humidity will bake much of the central US this week, making it feel as hot as 115 degrees in some places and leading some cities to open cooling stations and take other precautions. With current humidity levels, heat indexes will be between 105 and 109 degrees throughout the area.
To beat the heat, stay in air conditioned buildings as much as you can. Everyone can help reduce energy use by raising cooling temperatures by four degrees, avoid using major appliances and use ceiling fans and portable fans to enhance cooling ability of air-conditioners. Practice caution, heat illness can strike quickly.
Wear light-weight loose-fitting clothing to help your body “breathe”.
